- Hi there Folks - what do you make of this? Turned on our trusty 1960
- this morning only to hear it make a weird crackling noise - and then a
- 'pop' sound! This event occurred during the WB 3.1's 'black screen'
- boot-up period, before the EGS logo screen appears. (We've got an EGS
- Spectrum card in the A3000.) I thought it prudent (gentlemanly way of
- saying, "FUCK! PANIC!" ;-) ) to shut the monitor off immediately, not
- even waiting to see if the boot screen made it to the glass.
-
- A few minutes later - and after bringing the fire extinguisher in from
- the kitchen - I felt sufficiently brave enough to crank everything up
- again, "just to see what might happen" - although wifey was a tad
- reticent about the possibility of setting the bedroom on fire. This time
- there were no strange sounds from the 1960. The A3000 booted normally
- except that the screen was a kind of kaleidoscope of rainbow hues,
- through which the WB 3.1 screen appeared reasonably clearly, but was
- kind of pivoted about centre, about 10 degrees counter-clockwise. Talk
- about things that make you go, "Hmmmm..."
-
- Well, it wasn't much fun trying to work with a screen display like that
- (unless you're ripped), so I turned everything off again. But I was
- curious... what if I fired everything up again... (you know the
- feeling...) Well, whaddya know? You'd think nothing had happened - a
- completely normal boot-up. The 1960 is now working fine - although I
- can't help but feel that some sort of dreadful axe is hanging above its
- little, friendly, square head.
-
- Now, if this glitch becomes a habit, the 1960 will, of course, have to
- go into the repair shop - there's at least one that does 'em way down
- here in Christchurch, New Zealand; however, I am now very curious: Given
- the above facts, anyone out there got a notion as to just what the hell
- happened here this morning?
-
-
- PS: The 1960 was bought brand-new just over 3 years ago and has always
- performed wonderfully. We keep it clean and its cord and cable are
- firmly seated.
-

-
- Cheers, Tony McKee
